Red Smith and the 'Hall on the Wall'

Walter “Red” Smith may have made an indelible mark on American sports journalism in New York City, working for the renowned New York Times, but the iconic sportswriter's newest “home” is the IUPUI Campus Center, thanks to the new Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) Red Smith Hall of Fame.

The collection of plaques featuring APSE Hall of Fame inductees is in Suite 340 of the Campus Center. The Hall of Fame, overseen by the IUPUI-based National Sports Journalism Center, was dedicated this past spring with the newest inductee: author and sportswriter Mitch Albom of The Detroit Free Press. Albom wrote the bestselling books Tuesdays With Morrie and Five People You Meet in Heaven.

In addition to Albom, visitors can check out the plaques of such other sports icons as Dick Schaap of ESPN, Bud Collins (Boston Globe), Dave Anderson (New York Times), Dave Kindred (National Sports Daily), Shirley Povich (Washington Post), Jim Murray (Los Angeles Times) and — of course — Smith himself.
