Training with altitude

If a group of School of Physical Education and Tourism Management students and faculty have their way, worldclass sports training will blend with sports tourism in the highest regions of Kenya.

Two faculty and four students spent most of July in the African nation — a familiar partner with IUPUI-based schools and programs — developing plans to turn the High Altitude Training Center (HATC) into a point of destination for people interested in long-distance running, biking and physical training.

The HATC, founded in 1999 by four-time world champion Lornah Kiplagat, is located 7,000 feet about sea level and is renowned among distance runners around the globe. The facility is less than an hour from Moi University, the home of the IU-Kenya partnership for AIDS care and treatment, nominated a few years ago for a Nobel Peace Prize.
